Relationship between Depression and Life Satisfaction of Social Assistance Recipients - Focusing on Mediating effect of Self-esteem and Coping Strategies for Family Conflicts -

Abstract
This study identifies the difference in social assistance recipients self-esteem, coping strategies for family conflicts and life satisfaction dependent on the general characteristics. In addition, in terms of relationship between depression and life satisfaction, this study aims to verify the mediating effect of self-esteem and coping strategies for family conflicts. Therefore, the 10th year(2015) materials of Korea Welfare Panel Study was used and total of 567 social assistance recipients to the head of household were selected and analyzed as the research subjects. As the analysis method, t-test and ANOVA analysis was conducted to examine the difference by groups regarding depression, life satisfaction, self-esteem and coping strategies for family conflicts. In order to verify the relationship between depression, life satisfaction, self-esteem and coping strategies for family conflicts, regression was conducted. Finally, in order to verify the mediating effect of self-esteem and coping strategies for family conflicts, bootstrapping method was used.
As a result of the analysis, the depression of social assistance recipients had negative effect on their life satisfaction while self-esteem and coping strategies for family conflicts had partial mediating effect on the life satisfaction. To improve life satisfaction of social assistance recipients based on the study results, the necessity of diverse practical service interventions and policy development was proposed.
